Congressman Don Davis visits southern border

April 3, 2024

NOGALES, AZ (WITN) -Amid the ongoing fentanyl crisis, an eastern Carolina Congressman visited the southern U.S. border.

The NC Department of Justice says more than 200 Americans die every day from fentanyl overdose, nine of which are here in North Carolina.

Democratic Congressman Don Davis visited the border in Nogales which is the primary border crossing in the Tucson border patrol sector.

He toured the U.S. Customs and Border Protection facilities and got briefings on narcotics trafficking, including the flow of fentanyl across the border.

With fentanyl being a drug that is up to 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine Davis says steps need to be taken now to protect Americans.

“There’s just so much more work to be done, and it was made clear, speaking with those who are doing this work day in and day out that they are overwhelmed, under-resourced, they need more help, they need more resources. There’s only so much a person, K9, technology can do.”

According to the port director, last year alone they seized more than 51.4 million fentanyl pills at the Tucson border.
