Congressman Don Davis Votes Again for the Laken Riley Act

January 7, 2025

Congressman Don Davis voted in favor of H.R. 29, the Laken Riley Act, a vital piece of legislation that addresses critical failures in our immigration enforcement system to prevent future tragedies. Congressman Davis previously supported this bill in the 118th Congress, reaffirming his commitment to protecting American families from violent criminals unlawfully present in the United States.

"We have a responsibility to keep our communities safe. The Laken Riley Act ensures our immigration system is not allowing dangerous criminals to slip through the cracks," said Congressman Davis.

The Laken Riley Act includes two key provisions:

  1. Requiring ICE to Detain Criminal Illegal Immigrants: The bill mandates that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) issue detainers and take custody of migrants unlawfully present in the United States who commit burglary, theft, larceny, and shoplifting, as defined by state and local law.
  2. Empowering State Attorneys General: The bill allows state attorneys general to sue the Secretary of Homeland Security for injunctive relief if federal immigration policies, such as parole or failure to detain dangerous individuals, harm the state or its citizens.
