Congressman Don Davis Tours Western NC to Observe Helene Recovery and Economic Growth
Asheville, NC — Congressman Don Davis (NC-01) visited western North Carolina on Friday, May 23, to highlight economic recovery, regional unity, and national defense.
In September 2024, Hurricane Helene hit North Carolina, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and flash flooding that caused widespread damage across the state, with the majority of destruction occurring in western North Carolina. The storm resulted in more than 100 fatalities and caused up to an estimated $59.6 billion in damage. Recovery efforts have continued into 2025 as federal, state and local officials work together to rebuild and support affected communities.
During his visit to western North Carolina, Congressman Don Davis attended the grand reopening of the Walmart Supercenter in Asheville, which sustained heavy damage during Hurricane Helene. Local officials described the event as a significant milestone in the region’s ongoing recovery. The store is expected to generate jobs and boost economic activity in a community still rebuilding from the storm’s impact.
“Walmart represents more than just economic development in Asheville, it is a symbol of resilience,” said Congressman Davis. “It’s also a reminder that no matter whether we call the east or the west home, North Carolinians stand together.”
Congressman Davis then toured Hickory Nut Gap Farm, a family-owned operation in western North Carolina that has been in continuous operation since 1916, to survey storm damage and assess ongoing recovery efforts following Hurricane Helene. The storm caused significant damage to farms and agricultural operations across the region.
“Our farmers in western North Carolina have endured overwhelming obstacles and challenges in the wake of Helene,” said Congressman Davis. “We must do everything we can to ensure they have the assistance they need to recover, rebuild, and grow.”
Later, Congressman Davis met with Stephen Lee Freeman, Chief of the Bat Cave Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, the only volunteer fire department in Buncombe County. Under Chief Freeman’s leadership, the department provided critical support to residents in the wake of Hurricane Helene, offering food, shelter and a gathering place for impacted residents.
Congressman Davis further toured areas impacted by Hurricane Helene, reaffirming his commitment to securing federal resources for long-term recovery efforts.
The visit ended with a tour of Pratt & Whitney’s Asheville facility, where he met with company officials to learn more about their operations and contributions to commercial aviation and the U.S. military. Pratt & Whitney manufactures turbine airfoils for aircraft engines and also supports production of F135 engines for the F-35.
“Pratt & Whitney is not only creating high-quality jobs here in North Carolina, they are also playing a vital role in our national security,” said Congressman Davis. “They also played a crucial role in assisting with disaster relief during Helene.”
The visit underscored Davis’s ongoing work to connect communities across North Carolina and support economic growth and disaster resilience statewide.
