January 20, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. – This week, U.S. Congressman Don Davis (NC-01) pushed to advance access to affordable health care coverage during his first in-district work period.

On Monday, January 16, Congressman Davis attended the 21st Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Celebration entitled Remember, Celebrate, Act: A Day On, Not A Day Off. Congressman Davis, who served as the program’s keynote speaker, focused on the civil rights leader’s life and legacy while centering on expanding access to quality health care. On Tuesday, January 17, Congressman Davis held his ceremonial swearing-in at the Pitt County Courthouse. The Honorable James A. Wynn, Jr. administered the oath, and the Honorable Marvin K. On Wednesday, January 18, Congressman Davis hosted a roundtable to hear from local elected officials on how Congress can offer federal alternatives to closing the Medicaid coverage gap for the good people of North Carolina’s First Congressional District. For images of the roundtable, click HERE.

On Thursday, January 19, Congressman Davis visited a medical facility in Rocky Mount where he spoke with patients and staff.  The Congressman pledged to ensure North Carolina’s First Congressional District receives the resources it deserves to thrive and move forward. On Friday, January 20, Congressman Davis hosted a roundtable with health care stakeholders to discuss the importance of keeping our communities safe and healthy. "For far too long, leaders in non-expansion states have been unable to reach a consensus on expanding access to Medicaid.  As a result, constituents have suffered adverse health outcomes and significant financial hardship,” said Congressman Davis. “This goes beyond expanding access to lifesaving health care. This is an economic issue. This is a workforce development issue. This is a bipartisan issue. The time is now to ensure our most vulnerable populations in North Carolina’s First Congressional District have access to lifesaving coverage because health care is a human right. It should not be a privilege.”

As a co-sponsor of H.R.31, the Cover Outstanding Vulnerable Expansion-Eligible Residents Now (COVER Now) Act, Congressman Davis has been laser-focused on expanding accessible health care and improving the lives of residents of North Carolina’s First Congressional District.
