Congressman Don Davis Hosted a Town Hall in Halifax County to Hear Directly From Residents
WELDON, N.C. — Congressman Don Davis (NC-01) hosted a town hall at Halifax Community College (HCC), engaging with constituents on topics important to families and communities, ranging from housing, health care, and education to the economic well-being of eastern North Carolina.
Davis took questions directly from North Carolina’s First Congressional District residents, heard their concerns, and provided responses. Additionally, he delivered an update on some of his recent priorities in the U.S. House — including his work to combat rising costs across North Carolina, his involvement in the Farm Bill negotiations, and his commitment to safeguarding national security. Nearly 100 residents attended.

During the town hall, Davis discussed legislation he introduced that affects Halifax County directly. The first H.R. 1237 - Sarah Keys Evans Congressional Gold Medal Act honors Ms. Evans, whose stance against discrimination helped ignite the Civil Rights Movement. Davis introduced legislation with a Congressional Gold Medal, one of the highest civilian awards bestowed by Congress. The legislation is currently with the House Committee on Financial Services, awaiting further review.
Davis also introduced H.R. 5236 - Haliwa Saponi Indian Tribe of North Carolina Act, which would provide the Haliwa Saponi Tribe with the federal acknowledgment that has long been overdue. He stressed this federal recognition would honor the tribe's rich history. The legislation is currently with the House Committee on Natural Resources, awaiting further review.

In addition to legislation, Congressman Davis has also advocated for $225,000 in community project funding for the Detention Center Body Scanner Project in Halifax. The scanner would make it more difficult for inmates to smuggle drugs and other contraband into the facility while also providing a more thorough and less intrusive sweep of inmates, supplementing the regular hands-on and strip-styled searches of inmates upon entry to the detention center. Davis also distributed over $21 million in grants across Halifax County, ensuring continued progress and support for the community's growth and well-being.
