Congressman Don Davis Announces Teen App Challenge Winner
GREENVILLE, N.C. —Today, Congressman Don Davis (NC-01) named Kaiji Fu, a 12th grader at Junius H. Rose High School, as the winner of the 2023 Congressional App Challenge in North Carolina’s First District.
“Kaiji Fu’s App more than rises to the challenge of addressing a real-world problem, the cornerstone of its design is to save lives,” said Congressman Don Davis. “I am confident that Kaiji will continue to make significant contributions to both the tech industry and eastern North Carolina. His innovative work provides hope for a bright future for the East."

Kaiji developed the General Safety app, a user interface for a stop arm camera, hoping to reduce the number of school bus stop arm violations and protect school bus riders.
When the school bus stop arm extends, the web app records footage, including license plates, and uploads it to the cloud. Subsequently, it analyzes the footage for motion. If a motion is detected, the video is flagged for further review with an exclamation point while providing enough evidence for law enforcement to issue citations to violators.

The Congressional App Challenge is an official initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives. Members of Congress host contests in their districts for middle and high school students, encouraging them to learn to code and inspiring them to pursue careers in computer science.

The 2024 Congressional App Challenge will launch in May of 2024, and eligible students can pre-register for the competition now.
